Choose the task before the bundle. A useful spreadsheet should answer your question with entries you can maintain, in an app you can use. More files do not automatically create a more useful routine.
| Your main question | Start here | Main boundary |
|---|---|---|
| What bill amounts are open on each due date? | Free Bill Calendar | Dates and Open/Paid status; no income or bank balance |
| What is left after bills before the next payday? | Paycheck Budget | Manual cash entries and one or two regular pay schedules |
| How does each month compare with category plans? | Annual Budget | Actual-cash ledger; no unpaid-bill reservation |
| What changes in two repayment models? | Debt Payoff | Six debts and fixed assumptions |
| Who owes whom for shared expenses? | Couples Budget | Agreed splits and settlements; no bank transfers |
Two incomes or two expense shares?
Different paydays are a cash-timing question. Paycheck Budget can use two income schedules. Different shares of a household purchase are an allocation question. Couples Budget supports equal, income-based and custom splits. You may need one of these tasks without the other.
Why pay when free templates exist?
A free monthly or annual template may already meet your needs. Vertex42's personal budget is a free alternative with Google Sheets access. Our Free Bill Calendar covers a narrower due-date task.
Consider Paycheck Budget when the demonstrated connection between actual bill payments, remaining obligations and pay dates matches your routine. Consider Couples Budget when recording settlements separately from shared expenses is useful. Look at the examples and limits, not an unsupported label such as “best.” Instructions and a fictional demo can help you assess the workflow, but their presence does not prove it is easier for every person.
Try these three questions against an example
First, ask whether you can enter the information the tool requires: actual payments for Paycheck, category transactions for Annual, starting debt assumptions for Debt Payoff, or the payer and agreed shares for Couples. Second, inspect the result that answers your question. Third, check the limit that might affect your use before purchasing.
For shared costs, try the couples split and settlement example. For repayment ordering, use the snowball-versus-avalanche example. Neither requires buying a file to understand the calculation.
Match the record to the next decision
The four tools above cover different questions, but they are not the whole catalog. If your main task is saving toward a dated cost or planning with uneven income, compare that task before choosing a regular-pay workbook.
| Your next decision | Product to inspect | Boundary to check |
|---|---|---|
| How much have I allocated to each named savings goal? | Savings and Sinking Funds Tracker | Ten funds; recorded allocations do not move real money |
| What household transfers could an uneven income pattern support? | Irregular Income Buffer Planner | A manual household forecast based on your history and assumptions; no business tax calculation |
| What cash came in and went out during the period? | Personal Income and Expense Tracker | An actual cash record, not a bill-reservation or debt-payoff engine |
Try one representative entry before designing an elaborate routine. For a savings goal, name the cost and date; for a buffer forecast, identify the closed-month income figures you can support; for a cash record, locate an actual receipt or payment. If those inputs are unavailable, note the gap rather than treating an empty cell as a confirmed zero.
The sinking fund category guide shows how an existing allocation and a deadline change a contribution estimate. Keep a single product when it answers the question you need to maintain. A related bundle is not automatically a better fit, and a related-product link does not mean that product is included in the bundle.
When to choose the bundle
The Ultimate Personal Finance Bundle contains four distinct tools plus three smaller companions. Choose it for several tasks you intend to use. The files are separate and do not synchronize. Paycheck and Annual can involve overlapping transaction entries, so choose a main ledger or reconcile manually.
Check the setup before deciding
Software support is specific to the exact product and version. HFP’s catalog includes Google Sheets workflows and products that also support Microsoft Excel for the web. Do not infer Desktop Excel support from the .xlsx extension. Read the product’s current support statement and the compatibility page before choosing. Desktop-browser setup is recommended; separate working copies do not synchronize, and the files do not connect to a bank. Use one currency per copy. You can also watch the Paycheck example before choosing.
