Biweekly means every fourteen days. Semimonthly means twice in each calendar month, usually on two agreed dates. The terms describe different schedules; do not choose one just because both often look like two paychecks in a month.

A 2026 example

A biweekly schedule beginning January 2, 2026 runs January 2, 16 and 30, then February 13 and 27. That schedule has 26 paydays during 2026. A semimonthly schedule on the 15th and month-end runs January 15 and 31, then February 15 and 28. It has 24 paydays in 2026.

Every-fourteen-days schedules can produce 27 paydays in some calendar years. For example, January 1 through December 31, 2027 contains 27 dates spaced fourteen days apart. These are calendar counts, not a statement about your employer’s payroll policy.

A three-paycheck month still needs dated bills

January has three paydays in the biweekly example. That calendar fact does not make the third payment uncommitted money: bills and other spending still have dates. Review the window around each payment instead of assuming every month contains exactly two periods. The bills-before-payday example shows how to choose a period boundary.

What month-end means

A monthly payday anchored to January 31 becomes February 28 in 2026, February 29 in leap year 2028, and returns to March 31. In our template, semimonthly day 31 also means the last day of a shorter month. Weekends and holidays are not shifted automatically. Use a one-occurrence override to match the actual employer schedule.

Why the difference matters in a spreadsheet

A bill due the day before the next paycheck needs to appear in the current paycheck window. A bill due on the next payday belongs to the next period in this product. Choosing the wrong frequency can move the boundary and show the wrong set of planned obligations.

Use actual employer dates and net amounts. The Paycheck Budget spreadsheet supports both schedules, plus monthly pay, for one or two sources. It shows received income separately from plans and does not treat unreceived income as cash already in your account.
